Xanadu’s Sustainability Policy

Initiatives + Design + Education + People = Sustainability

The root word of sustainability is sustain — to keep, to support, to nurture. For us, it means running Xanadu in a way that protects Lombok’s natural beauty and uplifts its people, without depleting resources.

From our retreat design to how we handle waste, from our solar panels to our community partnerships, we measure our impact and constantly look for ways to improve. Sustainability isn’t a trend here — it’s a responsibility.

Our Sustainability Initiatives in Action

(Almost) Net Zero – Solar Powered

On an island where most electricity still comes from diesel and coal, Xanadu runs on sunshine.

We’re proud to operate the largest solar system in the area, generating nearly as much clean energy as we consume across our 2,750 m² retreat. Any unused power goes straight back to the grid, helping light up our local community.

Rainwater Collection

Fresh water is precious in the tropics — that’s why we love the rain.

We collect and store rainfall in a 180 m³ underground tank, filter it, and reuse it throughout the property for showers, laundry, and more. Multiple re-injection wells ensure that every drop eventually returns to the local aquifers.

No Plastic, No Cry

We’ve said goodbye to single-use plastic bottles. Guests enjoy unlimited refills of purified water.

Sustainable Toiletries

Our bathrooms feature natural, refillable shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hand washall sustainably made in Bali. Luxurious for you, gentle on the planet.

Organic Waste Management

At Xanadu, nothing goes to waste. Organic matter is turned into compost and animal feed, and even breakfast leftovers are happily shared with Luna, our beloved retreat dog.

Bin Sponsorship

Proper waste disposal shouldn’t be a luxury. We sponsor community bins to make waste management accessible in our local village — helping keep our island home clean.

Passive Architecture

Xanadu Retreat was designed following the principles of Passive Architecturebuilt with nature, not against it.

Our rooms are semi-buried into the hillside, allowing for natural cooling and seamless integration with the landscape. The terrain’s original shape was preserved, with minimal excavation and minimal removal of old trees that had long stood on the land.

Our Sustainability Fundamentals

Responsible Surf Retreats
Our retreats are designed to blend into the natural environment, operating within their limits while giving back to the local community. Guests get to surf fun waves while knowing their stay supports Lombok, not strains it.

Education & Empowerment
We believe change only works if it lasts. That’s why we empower both guests and our team with tools and knowledge to live more sustainably. Small actions, big impact.

Green Partnerships
Collaboration keeps us accountable. We work with various organisations like Ninē-Ninē, Batu Bambu Kids, Indonesia Biru and Lombok Plastic Free, Gracious Project to tackle plastic waste, encourage upcycling, and promote eco-tourism on the island.

Community at the Heart

Sustainability starts with people — and at Xanadu, our community is at the core of everything we do.

Over 90% of our team across both properties are Lombok locals (50+ people), many of whom have grown with us since the very beginning. Beyond employment, we invest in ongoing training in sustainability and hospitality practices so that knowledge can be shared with their families and wider communities.

We proudly partner with local boat captains, surfboard shapers, and women-led collectives, keeping traditional skills alive while strengthening the local economy.

Our collaborations extend to inspiring organizations such as Indonesia Biru, Batu Bambu Kids and Buffalo Pond with whom we support educational programs and environmental initiatives.

Every collaboration — from the surf breaks we visit to the coffee we serve — is a way to give back to Lombok, ensuring that the island and its people thrive alongside us.
