If you’ve never been to a surf camp or a surf & yoga retreat before, you’ve probably wondered what the days actually look like.
Are you surfing from sunrise until sunset? Is there any time to relax? Do you spend every day at the same beach? And what happens if the conditions change?
The truth is, no two days at Xanadu Retreat are exactly the same, and that’s one of the things our guests love most.
Unlike a traditional holiday with a fixed itinerary, life at a surf camp revolves around the ocean. The tides, swell and wind determine where we surf and when we go, allowing us to make the most of the conditions every single day.
Here’s what you can expect from a typical day at Xanadu Retreat.
The Day Begins with the Ocean in Mind
Every evening, our surf managers and coaches look at the forecast and decide on the best plan for the following day.
Sometimes that means enjoying a relaxed breakfast before heading out to surf. On other days, when the tides are perfect early in the morning, we’ll head straight to the beach and enjoy breakfast afterwards.
Rather than following the same timetable every day, we adapt to nature. It’s one of the reasons our guests experience such a variety of waves throughout the week.
Heading to the Best Waves
After breakfast – or before, depending on the conditions – it’s time to surf.
One thing many first-time guests don’t realise is that we may not surf the same beach every day.
South Lombok is blessed with an incredible variety of surf breaks, and each day our coaches choose the spot that offers the best conditions for your group’s ability level. Beginners, intermediate surfers and advanced surfers often head to completely different waves, allowing everyone to progress safely and confidently.
Some surf spots are only a short drive from the retreat, while others involve a scenic boat ride to one of Lombok’s beautiful reef breaks.
Although you’ll typically spend around two hours in the water, the entire surf experience usually lasts between three and three and a half hours, including travelling, changing, the pre-surf briefing and the journey back to the retreat.
Refuel and Recharge
After a morning in the ocean, you’ll return to Xanadu Retreat for a freshly prepared lunch.
This is when the pace naturally slows down.
Some guests stretch out on a sun lounger beside the infinity pool. Others alternate between the ice bath and infrared sauna in our recovery area. Some book a massage, enjoy a coffee with a view or simply head back to their room for a well-earned afternoon nap.
If you’re in the mood to explore, our complimentary shuttle makes it easy to pop into Kuta for a few hours before returning to the retreat.
There’s no pressure to be doing something every minute of the day. Recovery is an important part of learning to surf well, and we’ve intentionally created space for both.
Learning Happens Beyond the Surf Session
Many people assume that surfing is all about the time you spend in the water. In reality, some of the biggest improvements happen afterwards.
Throughout the week, you’ll take part in a variety of coaching sessions designed to help you understand your surfing and accelerate your progression.
Depending on the day, these may include surf theory, video analysis, practical surf workshops and movement sessions that help build better technique both in and out of the water.
Watching yourself surf, understanding your positioning and learning why something worked, or didn’t, often leads to breakthroughs that simply catching more waves can’t provide.
Time to Unwind
Afternoons at Xanadu Retreat are designed to leave you feeling restored rather than exhausted.
Depending on the day and your program, you may join one of our yoga classes, a mobility session designed specifically for surfers, or a cultural activity that offers a deeper connection to Lombok beyond the waves.
The daily schedule varies throughout the week, creating a balance between learning, movement and relaxation.
Many guests tell us this slower pace is one of the biggest surprises of the experience. They arrive expecting a surf bootcamp and leave having enjoyed a genuine retreat.
Evenings Are Relaxed
As the sun begins to set, the retreat becomes wonderfully peaceful.
Some evenings are spent sharing stories from the day’s surf over dinner. Others are perfect for a quiet drink by the pool, reading a book on your terrace or simply enjoying an early night’s sleep.
After a day in the ocean, most guests naturally find themselves ready for bed earlier than they would at home.
It’s a satisfying kind of tired – the kind that comes from fresh air, salt water and spending the day doing something you love.
No Two Days Are Exactly the Same
While there’s a natural rhythm to each week, every day offers something different.
The surf spot may change. The conditions will almost certainly change. One afternoon might include a yoga class, while another focuses on video analysis, a surf workshop or a mindset session.
That’s part of what makes a surf retreat so rewarding.
Every day feels fresh, and every session builds on the one before it.
More Than a Surf Camp
At Xanadu Retreat, we don’t believe the best way to improve is simply to surf until you’re exhausted.
Instead, we’ve built our programs around thoughtful coaching, carefully selected surf conditions, recovery and time to enjoy everything that makes Lombok special.
It’s this balance of progression, relaxation and connection that turns a week of surfing into an experience many guests return to year after year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you surf every day?
Yes. Our surf programs include one professionally coached surf session each day, planned around the best tides and conditions.
Do you surf at the same beach every day?
No. We choose the surf spot daily based on the conditions and the ability level of each group. This means you’ll often experience several different waves during your stay.
Is there enough free time?
Absolutely. Every afternoon includes time to relax, enjoy the infinity pool, use the ice bath and infrared sauna, book a massage or explore Kuta using our complimentary shuttle.
Why is there only one surf session each day?
For most surfers, one well-coached session combined with video analysis, theory, workshops and proper recovery leads to faster progression than spending all day in the water. It also leaves you with the energy to enjoy your holiday and everything else Lombok has to offer.
