Honestly… when people ask us whether they should surf Lombok, Indonesia, as their first-ever surf destination, the answer is easy.
Yes. Most definitely, Lombok is a great place to learn to surf. What are you waiting for?
In all seriousness though, Lombok is one of the best places in the world to learn to surf, especially if you’re a complete beginner.
The island’s south coast is lined with beautiful beaches and gentle, sand-bottomed breaks like Selong Belanak that are made for your first pop-ups. And while the lineups can get social, it’s for sure far less crowded than neighbouring Bali.
Add warm water, consistent waves year-round and ISA-certified surf guides and you’ve got close to a perfect setup for your first surf trip.
More and more first-timers choose to surf Lombok over the busier islands. And once you’ve been, it’s easy to see why.
If you want the fuller picture, we’ve put together a whole beginner’s guide to surfing Lombok, but here’s the short version of why it works and what you need to know before booking a Lombok surf trip.
Why Lombok works so well for beginners
Most people picture Indonesia and think of heavy reef breaks that only advanced surfers should go near. Uluwatu. G-Land. Nias. To name a few.
Lombok has some heavier waves, for sure, but it also has something rarer in Indonesia: forgiving beginner waves close to more advanced waves. All within a short drive or ride of the main surf hub, Kuta.
Here’s what makes a surf Lombok Indonesia trip such a good place to start:
- Sandy beginner breaks: Spots like Selong Belanak break over sand, not shallow reef, which takes the fear out of learning. That said, our favourite beginner surf spot, Tanjung Aan, is one of the most user-friendly reef breaks in the world. Trust us. You’ll love it
- Waves for every skill level: The south coast holds various breaks suitable for total beginners right through to experienced surfers, so you can keep progressing without changing islands
- It’s quieter than Bali: Unlike Bali, most surf breaks here aren’t a fight for waves. There are lots of surfers in the water, it has to be said, but not so many that you won’t get your fair share of rides
- Warm water and a laidback vibe: No wetsuit, no rush, no ego. Just good food, beautiful beaches and a relaxed vibe in the lineup that makes the whole surf experience easier on the nervous system
- Consistent waves year-round: Lombok offers surf across both the dry season and the wet season, so there’s almost always something working somewhere on the island
The best beginner surf spots in Lombok
You don’t need a surf map to get started. You shouldn’t try to freestyle it as a beginner anyway.
When you arrive at our surf retreat or surf camp in Lombok, our team gives you the rundown and takes you to the right break for the day’s conditions and your skill level. If you’re not sure where you sit yet, it helps to work out your surfing level first.
That said, here are the surf spots most beginners will get to know.
Selong Belanak
- A super beginner-friendly surf spot. It doesn’t deliver particularly good waves from a length-of-ride perspective, but for safety-conscious learners, it’s a classic
- You can also walk your board out to the lineup and even wade next to it while waiting for a wave, which makes surfing here about as unintimidating as it gets
- These are close to perfect waves for learning and the number one place to nail your pop-ups
Tanjung Aan
- One of the most beautiful beaches in south Lombok and our favourite beginner surf spot!
- A half-moon bay with a long A-frame wave in the middle that breaks both left and right, so there’s something for everyone
- On smaller days it’s brilliant for beginners and longboarders, offering a long, playful ride
- It’s suitable for building confidence… plus there’s a stunning beach to relax on afterwards
Note: Tanjung Aan can suit beginners when conditions are small and they are accompanied by a qualified local guide. Because the wave breaks over reef, it is not an all-conditions beginner spot.
Are Guling
- A quieter bay just west of town with a left and a right on either side of a deep channel
- The righthander is easier and more suited to beginners and intermediate surfers (on a small day!)
- There’s also a lefthander with a strong-ish current that can be harder to figure out
- Still, it’s often less crowded than the right and can be fun when it’s smaller
Inside Gerupuk
- A short boat ride from Gerupuk village gets you to the sheltered inside of the bay… a great next step once you’ve had a lesson or two
- Slightly more challenging but still forgiving enough for confident beginners and intermediate surfers working toward reef breaks
- There’s also Don Don’s nearby, which can be just as fun for early beginner surfers when it’s small
Note: The heavier stuff, the powerful waves and reef breaks that make Lombok famous, are further away. Desert Point on the far southwest is one of the longest lefthand barrels on earth and strictly for advanced surfers. Mawi Beach can also handle solid swells and breaks over shallow reef. It’s for more experienced surfers chasing the best surf of the season.
When should you visit Lombok to learn?
Lombok has two seasons and both work for beginners.
The dry season (roughly May to September)
This the peak travel and tourist season. Southeast trade winds blow along the south coast, the swell is consistent and most surf breaks are rideable on a daily basis. It’s also when the bigger, more powerful waves show up, so as a beginner you’ll stick to the sheltered bays while the advanced surfers chase tubes and rifling walls.
The wet season (roughly November to March)
Honestly, the wet season might be our favourite. The swell is smaller and mellower, the crowds thin out and the wind is more likely to be light to offshore on the southern coast. Tanjung Aan and inside Gerupuk stay very manageable and a couple of secret spots we won’t be naming here (but we’ll take you there!) work during this time. Fewer people, softer waves, more room to make mistakes.
Note: Tide matters too. Many of the gentler waves are at their friendliest on a mid to high-tide when the reef is covered by water and the waves feel softer. It’s worth getting your head around how tides, wind and swell shape the surf before you go.
What to expect from a surf camp/retreat in Lombok
A surf camp or retreat is easily the smartest way to learn here.
Trying to figure out surf spots in Lombok on your own, as a first-timer, is how people end up on the wrong wave for their level. A good camp or surf retreat removes that guesswork entirely. At a good retreat or surf camp in Lombok you can expect:
- Guided surf sessions: Your coaches pick the right break for the day and go in the water with you, so you’re always somewhere safe and suitable
- Structured surf lessons: Proper coaching on paddling, timing, pop-ups… all built around your skill level rather than a one-size-fits-all group
- Video analysis: Seeing yourself surf is one of the fastest ways to improve. It can be confronting at first, but there’s no progress without accountability
- Small groups and good vibes: Beautiful beaches, good food, likeminded people and a laidback vibe. A holiday as much as a lesson
- Everything sorted: Boards, transport, accommodation options and the daily plan… all handled by us!
A few practical things to know
Getting there is easy
Lombok International Airport is only 15-25 minutes from Kuta, so you can be checking waves within an hour of landing. Many people combine it with Bali, but plenty come straight to Lombok island for the mellow surf and quieter beaches.
Kuta Lombok is the hub
Not to be confused with Kuta in Bali, this is the surf town at the centre of it all. It’s close to surf shops, cafes and the best surf spots on the south coast.
You don’t need to be super fit
You don’t have to be an athlete to start. If you’re wondering what level of fitness you need to learn surfing, the honest answer is less than you’d think. The rest will come the more you surf.
Respect the ocean
Lombok’s mellow bays are beginner-friendly, but the reef breaks are not. Shallow reef, low tide and strong currents deserve respect. Surf within your ability, listen to local surfers and your guides. Respect nature and the lineup. That mindset keeps your Lombok surf trip fun and safe.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Is Lombok good for complete beginners?
Yes. Lombok is one of the best places in the world to learn to surf from scratch. Beginner spots like Tanjung Aan and Are Guling break over reef, but they’re pretty mellow and the lineups are friendly. You can easily practise your pop-ups without feeling out of your depth here.
Q. How long does it take to learn to surf in Lombok?
Most first-timers are standing up and catching white water within their first session or two and riding green waves on their own by the end of a week-long surf camp. Consistent daily surf sessions with a coach are what make the difference, which is why a surf retreat beats scattered one-off lessons.
Q. Is Lombok better than Bali for learning to surf?
For beginners, for sure. Lombok’s surf breaks are far less crowded, so you get more waves and less intimidation in the lineup. The learning-friendly spots are just as good and the whole island has a more laidback rural-meets-beach vibe.
Q. When is the best time to visit Lombok to learn to surf?
Both seasons work. The dry season (May to September) is the peak season with the most consistent waves, while the wet season (November to March) brings smaller, softer waves and thinner crowds that suit beginners nicely. A good surf retreat or camp reads the daily conditions and takes you to the right break either way.
Q. Do I need to bring my own surfboard?
No. We provide boards suited to your level along with transport to the surf spots and all the gear you need. You just show up ready to surf.
Q. Is it safe to surf in Lombok as a beginner?
Yes… as long as you surf within your ability and stick to the beginner-friendly bays.
Is Lombok good for learning to surf?
Without a doubt!
Between the forgiving southern beaches, the world-class waves waiting for when you’re ready, the quieter lineups and the laidback vibe, few places make learning this enjoyable.
