When people talk about surfing in Lombok, the conversation often starts with its year-round potential, and rightly so. There are waves here in every season. But like any destination shaped by swell and wind, the character of those waves shifts throughout the year. And with the dry season approaching in Lombok, it’s a good moment to look at what that really means.
The wet season brings its own rhythm. You can expect some rainfall, yes, but also lighter and more variable winds, which open up different corners of the coastline and often create softer, more forgiving conditions, especially appealing for those finding their feet or looking for a more relaxed pace.
From around May through October, the dry season settles in. This is when consistent Indian Ocean swell begins to pulse more regularly, rainfall becomes less frequent, and mornings are often at their cleanest. As the day unfolds, seasonal trade winds tend to pick up, shaping the lineup and creating more defined, performance-oriented conditions.
There are always waves to be found for beginners in Lombok, regardless of the season. But the dry season tends to draw in intermediate and advanced surfers – those looking to build confidence in slightly more powerful conditions, refine technique, and spend time in waves that offer a little more room to push their surfing.
If your goal is progression, not just time in the water, but meaningful, focused sessions – then the dry season is a window worth paying attention to.
Here’s why.
Why dry season is prime time for progression
There’s a reason many surfers book a surf trip during these months.
Dry season delivers:
- More consistent swells
- Favourable conditions across a range of surf breaks
- Key reef breaks working at their best with longer period swells
- Comfortable weather with less humidity and minimal rainfall
- A more social atmosphere during peak dry season
For intermediate surfers, this often means more opportunities to work on positioning, generate speed, and find rhythm on slightly more powerful – yet still approachable – waves.
For advanced surfers and experienced surfers, it means more opportunities to score reeling walls, punt sections and the sort of world-class waves Indonesia is famous for.
While there are always options for different levels, the dry season is when certain spots come to life including our favourite which we’ll keep under the radar here.
What to expect wave-wise
Not every destination handles size well. Lombok does.
Because there are multiple surf spots in Lombok facing slightly different directions, the south, southwest and southeast of the island can handle a range of conditions.
When the dry season pulses arrive, you’ll often find options that suit different levels and moods.
For progressing intermediates
You might be ready for:
- Faster takeoffs
- Longer rides
- More speed down the line
- Better sections for turns
- Learning how the tide changes a wave
For advanced surfers
You’re likely looking for:
- Hollower sections
- Steeper drops
- Faster walls
- More critical turns
- Technical entries over shallow reef
The best dry-season surf spots (for intermediate and advanced surfers)
One of the biggest reasons surfers love surfing in Lombok is the variety.
You’re not stuck surfing one wave all week (all that’s perfectly fine if you want to keep seshing the same spot!).
Here are a few of our local haunts.
Gerupuk
A famous zone near Gerupuk village, offering several breaks accessible by a short boat ride. Depending on swell and tide, there can be softer options plus more powerful peaks. Great for variety and in-depth surf coaching if you’re at that upper intermediate level.
Mawi
Mawi Beach can produce powerful peaks, shifting sections and serious thrills when the conditions align. Better for confident intermediates upward. Can be washy and hard to find the right spot to sit. It’ll test even the most advanced surfers when it’s bigger.
Ekas Bay and Outside Ekas
Ekas Bay offers multiple setups, while Outside Ekas turns on with more size and power. Plenty of room, amazing scenery and long walls.
Desert Point
A legendary Indonesian wave. Desert Point is one of the most famous lefts in Indonesia. In the dry season it can deliver genuinely world-class conditions. Important note: it’s not for casual intermediates. It’s a serious wave for highly experienced surfers who understand reef entries, speed and consequence.
5 things you need to know about Lombok’s dry season
The weather
Dry season in Lombok means:
- More sunshine and less rain interruption
- Cooler evenings
- Easier travel days
- Better conditions for exploring beautiful beaches
That means surf in the morning, coffee in Kuta Lombok, maybe browse local surf shops, then sunset somewhere ridiculously beautiful. A very hard life indeed! That said, we don’t want to throw shade on the wet season. We love that too for its own reasons.
The crowds
Yes, dry season is busier. You could also say it’s crowded compared with quieter wet-season months.
But there’s value in that. Learning to surf around others teaches:
- Patience
- Positioning
- Etiquette
- Wave selection
- Calm decision making
For progressing surfers, crowded lineups can sharpen awareness fast.
And Lombok still has enough spread-out surf spots and hidden corners that with guidance, you can often find fewer people than expected. Besides… sometimes the best sessions happen away from the obvious peak.
The social scene
Because dry season is travel season, Lombok becomes especially social.
Solo travellers love it because there are more chances to meet other surfers, join surf crews, share scooters, compare boards and laugh about wipeouts over dinner.
The vibe around Kuta Lombok, the south coast and beach cafés is lively without feeling overwhelming.
With loads of accommodation options, it’s easy to shape the trip around your budget and style.
The tides
Many Lombok breaks are tide sensitive, especially reefs.
Depending on the spot:
- Low tide may expose more of the reef and make entries sharper
- Higher tide can soften sections or open channels
- The right tide can turn average waves into perfect waves
This is why local knowledge matters. The same bay can feel completely different three hours later. It helps to chat to people on the beach or surfers just getting out of the water to get a feel for tides. Or get a guide that can help you to pick the best surf spots for the day.
Sooner rather than later you’ll figure it out. But don’t be afraid to ask around!
