As a predominantly Muslim island, Lombok is a truly special place to experience Ramadan.

This month-long celebration marks a time of peace, compassion and forgiveness for Muslims all over the world.

On Lombok, Ramadan in 2024 begins most likely on the 10th March before finishing around 9th April with the largest national Muslim celebration in Indonesia, Idul Fitri.

But can I still visit Lombok during Ramadan as a tourist? Will you be treated to the same Lombok paradise experience? What even is Ramadan?

This article will provide you with all the essential information you need to know for your first Ramadan in Lombok.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered to be the holiest month for Muslims.

It’s observed by abstaining from food, drink and other physical needs during daylight hours (In Lombok this is from around 6 am to around 6pm).

In addition, Muslims are encouraged to practise self-reflection, increased prayer and charity during this sacred time.

When is Ramadan in Lombok?

As mentioned previously, Ramadan in Lombok will begin around 10th March and runs end around 9th April. The final dates will be confirmed closer to the date by the moon sighting committee after the committee spots the new crescent moon.

These dates follow the full moon cycle and vary each year based on the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

During this time, the island sees an increase in religious activities and a change in daily routines.

Why do the inhabitants of Lombok celebrate it?

Lombok has been called the “Island of 1,000 Mosques” due to its Muslim-majority population.

This differs from neighbouring island Bali, which is predominantly Hindu.

The people of Lombok celebrate Ramadan to strengthen their connection to their faith and to show devotion to God. It’s a beautiful time of spiritual growth and community bonding.

Muslims who worship 5 times a day throughout the year will increase the frequency of their prayers and rituals during Ramadan.

A typical day during Ramadan in Lombok will start with a pre-dawn meal called suhoor, followed by morning prayers.

Fasting then begins at dawn and continues till sunset, when the fast is broken with a meal known as iftar

After the evening prayer, there are often communal gatherings for more food and celebration.

How does Ramadan affect tourism in Lombok?

There are a few noticeable changes that visitors may experience during Ramadan on Lombok.

The first is that many local food stalls and local restaurants will be closed during daylight hours. However, western-style restaurants and larger warungs (local beach shacks) will still be open for tourists.

The town centre also has a different atmosphere with increased religious activities and preparations for iftar.

Visitors are encouraged to be respectful of this sacred time and dress modestly when out exploring the streets.

Additionally, there will be less live music and parties during this month, but tourists can still enjoy a drink in the evenings at bars and restaurants.

The increase in prayers coming from mosques can also be heard throughout the town, but this won’t affect guests staying at Xanadu Retreat due to its hillside location.

Can I still visit Lombok during Ramadan?

Absolutely!

In our opinion, visiting Lombok during Ramadan is one of the best ways to truly experience the local culture and traditions. It’s a very special and sacred time on the island.

You’ll have the opportunity to try delicious Ramadan nibbles that are only available during this month and observe community gatherings for iftar.

Plus, with less tourists on the island, you may even have some of Lombok’s most popular beginner and intermediate surf spots to yourself.

The best part though?

This might be one of the most unique surf holidays in the world – with an opportunity to ride amazing waves and peel back the facade of Muslim customs to better understand the religion. It’s a truly novel experience!
