Dry Season Surfing Lombok / Everything You Need to Know

26 July, 2024 | Lombok, Surfing, travel lifestyle

Our love for Lombok’s wet season is well documented. What can we say?

We love the gentler waves, Lombok’s lush rainy season landscape and fewer crowds. But that’s not to say the dry season isn’t a winner.

If you have holidays during this time of year and consider booking a surf trip or wellness getaway (or both) to Lombok, here’s everything you need to know about the dry season on our fav island in the Indonesian archipelago.

Lombok dry season FAQ

When is the dry season in Lombok?

Lombok’s dry season typically runs from May to October, with the peak being July and August. The rainy season, on the other hand, runs from November to April.

What is the weather like during the dry season?

Average temperatures during the dry season range from 25-30°C (77-86°F), while the water temperature hovers around a balmy 27°C (80°F).

Wetsuit and tracksuit weather, it is not. The hills take on a brownish-green hue and there’s a noticeable lack of afternoon rainstorms. Some of Lombok’s many surf breaks also begin to come alive with offshore winds and consistent swells, and others will become more bumpy.

What is the driest month?

According to weather data, August is the driest month on Lombok. You can expect on average about two days of rain, but this is largely dependent on the year and can vary.

Is this the best season for surfing in Lombok?

Good question!

If you’re an upper intermediate or advanced surfer going on a surf trip to Lombok, dry season is your jam. The famously epic (and infamously crowded) Desert Point fires during the dry season.

The reason why it works more frequently during the dry season is due to two factors: the dominant southwest swells and prevailing east or southeast winds, which both favour this mythical spot.

For learner surfers, riding Lombok’s best beginner surf spots during the dry season is most doable, but wet season is our preference. Learn more about wet season waves in Lombok.

What are the most popular dry season surf spots?

In addition to Desert Point, which is considered the crown jewel of dry season surf in Lombok, there are a few other surf spots that come alive during this time.

Pro tip: Remember, Indonesian trade winds don’t usually kick up till mid-morning, so you can still score glassy waves at most of these spots provided you’re up early.

What are the crowds like during the dry season?

Since the dry season is also the high season for tourists, Lombok, and in particular the surfy hub of Kuta, can get a little crowded.

Then again, you might say that this observation is relative to our own perception of “crowded”. If you’re coming from a large city or even a large town, Lombok will still feel waaay less hectic during the dry season.

What are the main differences between the dry and wet season?

Besides the types of waves on offer, the main differences between the dry and wet season in Lombok come down to two things: weather and crowds.

Dry season is generally drier with fewer rainstorms, while the wet season is much greener and lush but also prone to more unpredictable storms. As for crowds, the dry season sees an increase in tourists, while the wet season has a more local feel.

What’s the easiest way to reach Lombok during this season?

No matter the season, flying from Bali to Lombok is the easiest option.

Why should I visit Lombok during the dry season?

It’s THE surf period for experienced surfers

Like every surfing destination, there’s a season with big waves and a season with smaller waves.

The dry season on Lombok is when almost all surf spots offer a bit more size, with clean south-southwest swells marching up from the depths of the Indian Ocean and wrapping their way around to the various reefs and beach breaks on Lombok’s south coast.

If you’re a confident intermediate surfer or a veteran charger, THIS is the time to visit Lombok. Desert Point is a lightning rod for swell and surfers, but there are many other surf spots that also fire during this period.

Offshore winds, reef break barrels and friendly local surfers? Check, check and check! Oh… and fear not, beginners. There are still plenty of learner-friendly surf spots for you too!

You can maximise your beach time

While the wet season isn’t as wet as you might think, the dry season on Lombok is sunny and practically cloudless almost every day.

This means more time to catch some rays, relax on the beach and enjoy all the other outdoor activities that Lombok has to offer.

Take a dip in the crystal-clear waters or go snorkelling at one of the many beautiful reefs around Lombok’s coast. Or simply kick back with a cold drink and watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean.

With bluebird days on tap, you can maximise your beach time and fill your camera roll with envy-inducing photos… which you can then send to your family, friends and coworkers stuck back home. Mwa-ha-ha!

Mountain treks are on the cards

Dry season weather on Lombok means previously slippery or sketchy hiking routes are ripe for boot-scooting!

It just so happens that Lombok is home to some of Indonesia’s most picturesque and challenging treks.

Trek to the summit of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano and the second-highest mountain in Indonesia, for stunning views of Lombok’s landscape. Or explore the lush forests and waterways of Senaru Village.

Either way, you can find local guides to lead you any number of dry season adventures. Then, when you’ve ticked off that bucket list item, you can relax with a refreshing libation. Which brings us to our next point…

The nightlife is next level

Kuta, the epicentre of surf culture and nightlife in Lombok, is lively during the wet season, but the dry season is a whole other beast.

If we could describe it in one word, it’d be epic. Parties, live music, bonfires on the beach and BBQs under the stars… It’s all happening in Kuta during the dry season.

Meet your new friends at any one of Kuta’s local watering holes or amazing restaurants, and chances are you’ll be in for a memorable night. Just be sure to save some energy for early morning surf sessions.

There are many things we’ll forgive you for, but missing a pumping surf session or trip to one of our beautiful beaches due to a hangover is inexcusable!

Southern hemisphere residents can escape the cooler months

Cowering behind your desk as a fierce, brisk wind whips by the office windows? Rugged up on the couch after another cold and rainy day? Feel like you haven’t seen the sun in hours, weeks… months?

Fear not, southern hemisphere friends. A trip to Lombok is the antidote to your winter blues!

Say ,“Hell naaah”, to the colder months with a week of daily yoga, organic breakfast and dinners, soothing meditation practices and surf sessions in board shorts or bikinis.

Getting a summer glow in winter and recharging your batteries has never been easier!
