Travelling to Lombok
How to get to Lombok from Bali?
There are three main ways to travel between Bali and Lombok.
- Plane: 25–30 minutes flight time
- Fast Boat: Approximately 2–3 hours (plus the drive from the harbour)
- Ferry: Approximately 5 hours (plus the drive from the harbour)
While many surfers enjoy the fast boat experience, flying is by far the quickest and most convenient option. Keep in mind that sea travel times can vary depending on weather and ocean conditions.

Can I bring my own longboard to Lombok?
Yes, although the easiest method depends on how you’re travelling.
If you’re coming from Bali, bringing a longboard by ferry or fast boat is generally straightforward. Flying with a longboard can be more complicated, particularly on smaller domestic aircraft.
For international flights arriving directly into Lombok from destinations such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta, larger aircraft may accommodate longboards, but airline policies vary considerably. Always check surfboard size restrictions before booking.

What is the easiest way to travel to Lombok?
The easiest way to reach Lombok is by plane. You can fly from a number of Indonesian airports, including Jakarta and Denpasar, as well as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Lombok International Airport (LOP).
Do I need travel insurance when visiting Lombok?
We strongly recommend it.
Travel insurance provides peace of mind for everything from flight disruptions and lost luggage to surf-related injuries and medical emergencies. Hopefully you’ll never need it, but you’ll be glad it’s there if you do.
World Nomads or Safety Wing offer insurance options for longboarders on Lombok.
Longboarding on Lombok
Where should I stay for a longboarding trip in Lombok?
Most longboard surfers choose to stay around Kuta Lombok, as it provides easy access to many of South Lombok’s most popular longboard waves.
Staying in Kuta allows surfers to reach a variety of surf breaks within a short drive or boat ride while also enjoying cafés, restaurants, yoga studios and wellness facilities.
For surfers who want structured coaching and progression, joining a longboard-focused surf camp or coaching retreat can be one of the most effective ways to improve while exploring different waves around Lombok.
Why is Lombok becoming so popular with longboard surfers?
Longboarders tend to look for three things: good waves, manageable crowds and plenty of water time.
Lombok delivers all three.
Compared to many well-known surf destinations, lineups are often less crowded and surfers have access to multiple waves depending on conditions. This creates an ideal environment for learning, refining technique and simply enjoying the feeling of riding a longboard.
Combined with surf coaching, yoga, recovery sessions and a relaxed pace of life, Lombok has become one of Indonesia’s most appealing destinations for longboard-focused surf holidays.
What are the best longboard waves near Kuta Lombok?
One of the reasons surfers love Kuta Lombok is the variety of waves available.
Depending on conditions, surfers can find beginner-friendly beach breaks, playful walls perfect for practising turns and longer reef waves ideal for trimming, cross-stepping and nose riding.
Rather than relying on one famous wave, Lombok offers a collection of surf breaks that work under different conditions, making it one of the most versatile longboard destinations in Indonesia.
I’m not sure how to classify my surf level. Can you help me?
Of course! At Xanadu, we work with everyone from complete beginners catching their first green wave to experienced longboarders looking to refine style and technique.
Our coaching levels are structured as follows:
- Level 1 – The beginner

Here’s our detailed guide to identifying your surf level.

Which season offers the best longboarding conditions?
In our opinion, the best season for longboarders on Lombok is the wet season. During this period, surfers can enjoy cleaner conditions, smaller swells and fewer crowds, creating ideal opportunities for improving technique, building confidence and spending more time on quality waves.

Bali or Lombok: Which is better for intermediate longboarders?
Both destinations offer excellent surfing.
However, many intermediate longboarders prefer Lombok because it provides more opportunities to surf various long peeling waves.
If your goal is wave count, progression and enjoying your sessions, Lombok is hard to beat.
What should I pack for a longboarding holiday in Lombok?
We recommend bringing:
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Zinc
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Rash vest or lightweight surf top
- Swimwear
- Reusable water bottle
- Surf wax (optional)
- Reef booties (optional)
The tropical sun can be intense, so sun protection is one of the most important things you’ll pack.
Is Lombok suitable for beginner longboarders?
Definitely.
South Lombok is home to several beginner-friendly waves that offer long rides, forgiving conditions and a fantastic environment for learning.
For many surfers, Lombok provides the perfect balance between progression and enjoyment.
What happens if the surf conditions aren’t great?
One of Lombok’s biggest advantages is variety.
Because there are multiple surf breaks working under different conditions, it’s rare to have no options at all. While we can’t control the weather, we can use local knowledge to find the best available waves each day.
What’s the best way to improve my longboarding?
Consistent coaching.
While simply surfing more often helps, structured feedback accelerates progression dramatically.
At Xanadu, longboarders receive coaching designed to improve wave selection, positioning, trimming, style, cross-stepping and overall confidence in the water.
Video analysis, surf theory and personalised feedback help transform good surf sessions into meaningful progression.
Are there luxury surf retreats in Lombok?
Absolutely.
For surfers who want to combine progression with comfort, Lombok now offers a growing number of boutique retreats and wellness-focused surf experiences.
At Xanadu Retreat, guests enjoy daily surf coaching, yoga, recovery facilities, spa treatments, ocean views and thoughtfully designed accommodation—all within easy reach of Lombok’s surf breaks.

Also, make sure to be conscious of other surfers in the lineup by following the rules of surf etiquette.
